OUR STORY
J&J Design was founded in 1983 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, by brothers Japec and Jernej Jakopin.
During the first decade the studio created bestselling sailboat designs for major European builders such as Elan, Jeanneau and Bavaria.
In 1991 we added an in-house plug and mould shop, enabling us to offer a complete development chain – from concept design, naval architecture and engineering through to tooling and prototyping.
We entered the powerboat segment in 1987 and for the last 25 years most of our work has been in this field, supported by extensive research in tank-testing facilities. Applying carbon/epoxy technology to production boatbuilding led to the Shipman Carbon sailboat range, launched in 2002. Our first diesel-electric and full-electric range, Greenline, followed in 2008; today more than 1,000 hybrid boats in service are based on J&J designs – the largest such fleet worldwide.
In 2011 we partnered with the newly founded Chinese power catamaran brand Aquila, which has since become the world’s largest powercat brand, built on nine J&J designs. More recently we have designed for Saxdor, currently the fastest-growing powerboat brand in the world, entered full-electric foiling with the BMW/TYDE project, and developed the Beneteau Group’s latest full-electric Island Cruising Concept.
Today our work builds on over 400 projects for production builders on three continents.
